The Passionate Soul

Kourosh Taghavi

  1. The Passionate Soul

Taghavi’s only liner note about this 27.5-minute-long solo setar improvisation: “I have often thought that ‘Dashti,’ one of my beloved Avaz of Iranian classical music, speaks of a lost love—a painful one perhaps. This is the story of souls who will remain in our hearts forever. Souls who painfully perished and whose dignity and passion inspired these melodies.”

I was introduced to this track by RadioDarvish.com, a streaming-audio Internet radio station featuring traditional Persian music, one day in May of 2008, and I was struck by how amazingly passionate and intense it was, how evocative that simple stringed instrument could be in the right hands.
